Dem senator purchased luxury condo from green energy lawyer pushing wind farm in home state

FIRST ON FOX: Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia recently purchased a luxury waterfront condominium from a senior lawyer at Dominion Energy, a multibillion-dollar energy company developing a massive offshore wind farm in his home state.

According to his 2022 financial disclosures filed this month, Kaine reported purchasing a residential property worth up to $1 million in March 2022. A Fox News Digital review of local real estate filings showed that Kaine and his wife Anne Holton paid $895,000 for a multi-unit condominium in Richmond, Virginia, from Dominion deputy general counsel George Marget on March 8, 2022.

The condominium’s listing touted the residence as one of the most luxurious in the city. The condominium has two master suites, a gourmet kitchen, dining room and comes with three parking spaces.

Kaine’s disclosures further indicated that the senator earned up to $15,000 renting the apartment back to the “previous owner.” However, a spokesperson for Kaine — who defended the purchase, saying it was negotiated by realtors — said the filing should have stated “previous occupant” since it was rented to a tenant who had been living in the condominium at the time of the purchase.

“Senator Kaine and Anne Holton bought their condo from the Margets in a transaction negotiated by realtors,” the spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “The Margets did not live in this condo and instead had a long-term tenant who rented the condo from them. This tenant, who was not

Attorney for Wisconsin boy accused of killing mom over video game asking to lower bail to amount in piggy bank

A 10-year-old Wisconsin boy accused of killing his mother because she would not buy him a virtual reality headset appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday.

During the court hearing, the boy sat quietly with his head down while his attorney asked that his bail be lowered from $50,000 to $100, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Attorney Angela Cunningham reportedly argued that the boy has no source of income, but around $100 in a piggy bank.

“We have spoken to him about his ability to post anything. He told us about piggy banks with savings that he had from gifts, from birthday gifts. And scavenging through cushions on the couch that he’s been able to save up,” Cunningham said.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jane Carroll refused to lower the amount from $50,000 and also placed travel restrictions on the boy should he post bail.

Prosecutor Paul Dedinsky asked Carroll to require that he be released into the custody of a family member if he was released, but that restriction was not imposed.

Since the boy has been charged as an adult, Cunningham argued it would be “unheard of” to require a defendant in adult court to stay in the custody of a family member on pretrial release, the Associated Press reported.

The judge appeared to agree with Cunningham and required the child to be placed on GPS monitoring if he gets out of juvenile detention, where he is being held.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the Unemployment Insurance Agreement Thursday, his office announced.

This finalizes a bipartisan plan to pay down $1.36 billion in unemployment insurance loan debt remaining from the COVID-19 pandemic. The agreement will save taxpayers an estimated $20 million in interest costs and preserve hundreds of millions of dollars in future federal tax credits for Illinois employers, without decreasing benefits for employees, a press release states.

“Today, I signed historic, bipartisan legislation to eliminate pandemic-induced UI Trust Fund debt, replenish the fund for the future, protect benefits for working families, and further fuel Illinois’ strong economic trajectory,” Pritzker said in a statement. “We are delivering an investment of $1.8 billion—$1.36 billion of which will pay off the remaining balance of federal advances and $450 million of which will serve as an interest-free loan to the Unemployment Trust Fund. This bipartisan agreement eliminates the final portion of the $4.5 billion debt forced upon our state during the pandemic.”

The bill, negotiated by representatives from business, labor, bipartisan members of the General Assembly, and the state, will contribute more than $1.8 billion in state funds to the unemployment insurance trust fund, according to the release. This includes the payment of the remaining $1.3 billion federal loan balance borrowed under Title XII of the Social Security Act.

“This agreement makes history and makes financial sense,” Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton said in a statement. “It is a collaborative effort by stakeholders and

Judge nixes Legal Aid Society’s bid to have feds take over Rikers Island

A Manhattan federal judge dealt a blow to advocates for Rikers Island prisoners on Thursday, barring the Legal Aid Society from requesting a federal takeover of the Big Apple’s troubled jail system.

Judge Laura Taylor shot down a request from the city’s largest legal aid nonprofit that it be allowed to formally lobby for the appointment of a “receiver” — or third-party administrator — to oversee Rikers Island and other city Department of Correction facilities.

While Swain said she remains deeply concerned about safety issues at Rikers, the promise of a receiver could divert resources away from keeping inmates safe and could be counter productive, she noted.

Allowing Legal Aid to argue for the receivership would be “premature and inconsistent with the legal restraints,” the judge added at the end of the lengthy hearing on Thursday.

The Legal Aid Society was hoping to lobby for a third-party to step in and oversee the Department of Corrections.

Legal Aid attorney Mary Lynne Werl was had pleaded with Swain to consider the group’s argument for a receiver, arguing that seven years had passed since a federal monitor was appointed to institute reforms at the jail.

“Continuing down the same path cannot and will not bring relief to the plaintiff class,” Werlwas, who represents prisoners at the jail complex, told the judge.

The attorney cited a litany of concerns, including use of force by staff, chronic absenteeism and the inability of guards to stop inmate suicides.

Elon Musk ‘wants free speech to reign on the internet’: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton believes Elon Musk appears to want “free speech to reign on the Internet” and would welcome him should the Tesla CEO move forward with purchasing Twitter.

Musk has been locked in an ongoing legal battle with Twitter after backing out of a deal to purchase the social media platform. The judge overseeing the case paused proceedings Thursday after Musk proposed to move forward with the original agreement to purchase Twitter for $44 billion.

“He appears to be a guy that wants free speech to reign on the Internet,” Paxton told Fox News.I welcome somebody getting into the marketplace that will just allow people to speak freely and not try to limit them based on what their political positions are or their religious positions.”

“Those are sacred rights and sacred ideas that our founders built this country on,” Paxton added.

‘Riverdale’ actor and convicted murderer Ryan Grantham fears for his safety in maximum-security prison: lawyer

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

“Riverdale” actor and convicted murderer Ryan Grantham is worried about his safety if he serves his sentence in a maximum-security prison, according to his lawyer, Chris Johnson.

The 24-year-old Canadian was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 14 years after he pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his mother Barbara Waite.

Johnson told Fox News Digital Grantham could be at a higher risk of abuse in prison due to his “diminutive” stature and “young-looking” appearance.

The Vancouver-based criminal defense lawyer said the issue was first raised during court proceedings by the judge who presided over Grantham’s case, Justice Kathleen Ker.

‘RIVERDALE’ ACTOR SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR KILLING MOTHER, PLANNING PM TRUDEAU ASSASSINATION

According to Johnson, Justice Ker requested that corrections authorities send Grantham to a medium-security prison instead of a maximum-security facility.

Johnson said he shares her concern over Grantham’s safety as the former child actor is 5-foot-2, weighs “about 100 pounds” and “looks like a 17-year-old.

“My biggest concern is that he will be preyed upon by other prisoners and perhaps abused by them. We send people to prison to be both punished and rehabilitated. And so I’m hopeful that the latter can take place. We don’t send people to prison so they can be punished by other prisoners.”

Johnson explained that, in the Canadian court system, the court has no authority to determine which institution an offender serves time. He said once an offender is sentenced, correction authorities have jurisdiction over that decision.

Lawyer Says The Martha’s Vineyard Migrants Were Told To Give Falsified Documents

The migrants who crossed the southern US border and were later flown in two planeloads to Martha’s Vineyard were given falsified addresses corresponding to “random homeless shelters” for their official paperwork, according to a Boston immigration attorney.

Rachel Self suggested Friday that this was done purposefully by Department of Homeland Security officials to make it more difficult for the migrants to stay in the country.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) took credit for arranging and funding the flights, which landed Wednesday afternoon at the wealthy island community off the coast of Massachusetts. Heatat to make a point about the surge in migration along the border with Mexico, even though his state does not abut the country.

The Miami Herald reported that Self is assisting with the migrants’ cases.

She told reporters that the group of 50 men, women and children mostly from Venezuela were processed by DHS agents before leaving San Antonio.

Some of the migrants had specifically told the DHS agents that they had no mailing address in the United States, Self said.

They had allegedly been instructed to notify US Citizenship and Immigration Services the wrong agency once they changed addresses.

“This is especially troubling, as anyone with even the most basic understanding of the immigration proceedings knows that USCIS was not the agency with whom the migrants would have to record their addresses,” Self said during a press conference.

Deshaun Watson’s suspension demonstrates NFL, Roger Goodell ‘don’t care’ about sexual assault, lawyer says

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The lawyer who represented the women who accused Deshaun Watson of sexual assault in two dozen civil lawsuits blasted the NFL after the Cleveland Browns quarterback was suspended for 11 games.

Tony Buzbee took the league and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to task after Watson received the extended discipline Thursday. Watson was also fined $5 million.

“By settling this matter the way he has, Roger Goodell has proven one of two things: either his recent rhetoric was utter ballooney, or his bark is much worse than his bite. My belief is that he is nothing more than a paper tiger. The message today to all victims is clear, if you believe you have been sexually assaulted by a powerful person, keep your mouth shut and go away. The NFL has certainly demonstrated that its ownership and the organization don’t care,” Buzbee said in a statement, via the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

“To all sexual assault survivors, do not allow this recent ‘punishment’ to deter you. Keep speaking up and speaking out. Your voice matters. You are making a difference. We stand with you,” he added.

The suspension came in an agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, and after independent disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson had previously levied a six-game ban on Watson. The league decided to appeal and push for a season-long suspension.

The NFL said Watson must also “undergo a professional evaluation by behavioral experts and will follow their treatment program.”

New York approves gun law requiring buyers to provide social media handles

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a new gun control bill Friday after the Supreme Court ruled last week that the state’s rules that make it difficult for residents to obtain a concealed carry permit were unconstitutional.

The latest legislation was signed into law shortly after New York’s Democratic-controlled Legislature passed the proposal. Hochul had called the Legislature back to Albany on Thursday for an “extraordinary session” to work on the bill in response to the high court’s decision.

The law struck down by the Supreme Court stated that gun owners would have to demonstrate “proper cause” to receive a concealed carry license.

The new law will require people trying to purchase a handgun license to hand over a list of social media accounts they have maintained over the last three years, so officials can verify their “character and conduct.”

According to the measure, applicants must prove they have “the essential character, temperament and judgment necessary to be entrusted with a weapon and to use it only in a manner that does not endanger oneself and others.”

“Sometimes, they’re telegraphing their intent to cause harm to others,” Hochul said at a news conference.

Individuals applying for a license to carry a handgun will also be required to provide four character references and take 16 hours of gun safety training and two hours of shooting practice at a range. They will be subject to periodic background
